Please note: voters are NOT required to show photo ID for the March 2020 primary election. On December 31st, a federal district court blocked North Carolina’s photo ID requirement from taking effect.  The injunction will remain in place until further order of the court.

Driver’s License or Non-Operator ID Card 

  • Must be unexpired OR expired for one       year or less
  • REAL-ID is not required.
  • If from another state, voter must have registered in NC within 90 day of election

Approved College/University Student ID 

Military ID or Veterans ID

  • May be expired or have no expiration date 


Approved State/Local Government or Charter School Employee ID

US Passport or Passport Card

  • Must be unexpired OR expired for one year or less 

Tribal Enrollment Card

  • Must be issued by a federally recognized or state-approved tribe
  • May be expired or have no expiration date
If you are over 65 years of age: You may use ANY acceptable type of photo ID listed above that has been expired for ANY LENGTH OF TIME provided that the ID expired after your 65th birthday.

How to get a FREE Voter ID Card

If you don’t have an approved ID to vote, do not worry. You can quickly and easily get a FREE one!
  • Go to the county Board of Elections, at 201 N Chestnut St, Winston-Salem, any time before the end of onestop early voting. 
  • Board of Elections office is open M-F, 8 am - 5 pm.  
  • You will not need to show any documents to get a Voter ID card, however, you MUST BE A REGISTERED VOTER. 
  • If you are not registered, you can register to vote and get an ID at the same time. 

Frequently Asked Questions about Voter ID


When is Photo ID required? 
  • Photo ID is NOT required for elections in 2019.
  • REAL-ID is not required.
  • Starting in 2020, you WILL be asked to show photo ID if you vote in person.
  • If you vote absentee by mail, you will still need a photo ID and will be asked to include a copy of it with your absentee ballot.
  • If you do not have an acceptable ID, you may sign an affidavit declaring you have a qualifying exception
If I don’t have an ID, can I still vote?
  • All registered voters will be allowed to vote with or without a photo ID. 
  • You can vote a provisional ballot if you do not have an acceptable ID. The provisional ballot will count if you:
  1. Bring  acceptable photo ID  to the county Board of Elections no later than 10 days after the election OR 
  2. Sign an affidavit declaring you have qualifying exemption from the requirement.
What are the qualifying exemptions?
  • Reasonable impediment that prevents you from presenting a photo ID when you vote in person OR enclosing a copy of your ID when you vote absentee by mail;
  • Religious objection to being photographed;
  • Declared natural disaster occurring within 100 days before the election
